Why renovate your pool ?
Piscine Ambiances reveals the benefits of renovating your pool, from increasing your property’s value to improving energy efficiency and reducing your environmental footprint.
Economy and ecology
Renovating your pool can make it more eco-friendly and less energy-consuming by focusing on eco-responsible filtration systems, pool covers to reduce evaporation, or less polluting water treatments. It can also increase the value of your property !
Several opportunities arise during a renovation to improve the energy and ecological performance of your pool. Many pieces of equipment in your technical room could help you reduce energy consumption: you can upgrade your filtration system, switch from a single-speed pump to a variable-speed pump, or convert your chlorine-treated pool to a saltwater electrolysis system.
You can also change your filtration system from sand filtration to cartridge filtration. This mode of filtration, much less polluting, requires only one or two cleanings per year, with cartridge replacements every 4 to 5 years.
Piscine Ambiances also offers the installation of a solar-powered above-ground cover. If you already have an above-ground pool cover, you can add a solar panel that uses collected energy to motorize the opening and closing of your cover.
For water-conscious consumption, Piscine Ambiances has developed a water recovery tank that can be installed at the end of your renovation project. This tank, with a capacity of 2 to 7m³, collects surplus water from your pool to be stored for topping up or other external uses (filter cleaning, equipment maintenance, etc.).
Finally, renovating your pool can increase your property’s value, especially if you choose more efficient and energy-saving equipment.
Liner replacement and repair
Liner replacement is usually one of the first needs in a renovation. About ten years after your pool’s construction, you may notice signs of wear: leaks, detachment, stains…
Several factors can cause deterioration of the liner, the most obvious being natural wear. Your pool is a living space subject to various constraints (frequent use, weather, aging). If you’ve used overly aggressive treatments, they could negatively affect your liner.
Changing the liner can also be an opportunity to modernize your pool’s appearance. We offer several types of liners: standard liner, reinforced PVC, or 3D Touch. You can opt for a textured liner with a natural effect thanks to 3D Touch or simply change the color of your liner.
Filtration system upgrade
There are three main filtration options for your pool: sand filters, cartridge filters, and diatomaceous filters.
Diatomaceous filters are very expensive and polluting; during cleaning, you must ensure not to discharge diatomaceous earth into the environment. However, this filter offers the finest filtration. Sand filters require a lot of water for cleaning, while cartridge filters are the most responsible, practical, and economical filtration method.
Pump system replacement
Choosing your filtration pump is very important as it is the heart of your technical room. The pump is chosen based on several criteria: the volume of your pool, energy consumption, and the existing filtration system. To calculate the necessary flow rate to filter your entire pool, divide the pool’s water volume by 4 (hours).
Example: For a 100m³ pool, 100/4 = 25, so you would need a pump with a 25m³/hour capacity.
Generally, we recommend opting for a variable-speed pump as you can adjust filtration based on your pool’s water volume.
However, we advise consulting an expert if you wish to change your filtration pump, as it must be compatible with the existing installation.
Cover installation
A pool cover is one of the existing means to ensure safety around your pool and to save money. Your pool water will always experience some evaporation; however, covering your pool is the solution to limit water loss (95% reduction in water evaporation, according to the FPP).
Several types of covers are available depending on your needs. If you want to heat your water for free by 5 to 7°C, we recommend a polycarbonate cover; however, be careful in extreme heat, as the water may become too warm.
Other covers meet current safety standards: standard submerged covers, above-ground covers, and bar covers. All these devices limit water evaporation and protect against impurities.
Renovation is an opportunity to upgrade your cover system to a polycarbonate cover or even a Smartcover∂! An innovation by Piscine Ambiances, this cover is designed to be discreet, stylish, and easy to maintain.
Coping stone renovation
Coping stone renovation is common and important. If they become loose, they can cause falls or injuries. Detachments, cracks, or damaged joints may be observed and should be addressed promptly to avoid the risk of leaks.
By changing the coping stones, you can completely reinvent your pool’s design.
Sealing parts
Sealing parts are constantly in use and can become damaged over time. A professional’s opinion is necessary to avoid leaks or poor water filtration in the long term. Each part serves a specific function:
• Skimmer: Removes excess water from the pool and plays a key role in the first stage of water filtration.
• Main Drain: Like the skimmer, it plays an important role in the filtration process by removing debris from the bottom of the pool through water circulation, pushing impurities into the filtration system.
• Vacuum Fitting: Used to connect the vacuum cleaner.
• Return Inlet: Part of the second stage of filtration, returning clean, filtered water to the pool.
If you notice any issues with these parts, contact us !
Technology and ecology in pool renovation
Smart water management
Modern technology allows you to manage water more efficiently and reduce the need for chemicals while maintaining healthy pool water. For example, a pH regulator is a very useful tool to complement a salt chlorinator. It adjusts the pH in real-time, raising or lowering it as needed.
A variable-speed pump is also part of smart water management, as its speed is pre-programmed based on your pool’s filtration needs and schedule.
At Piscine Ambiances, water management is optimized from the pool’s construction with the implementation of the inverted hydraulic concept. This method aims to filter water from the bottom while guiding debris toward the filter or skimmers for optimal filtration.

FAQ renovation
When should I renovate my pool ?
Pool renovations require planning. However, after around fifteen years, it’s likely you’ll need to consider some renovation work.
This phase involves various aspects depending on the wear and tear of your pool: Replacing waterproofing, renovating masonry walls, replacing sealed components, changing the filtration system and associated equipment, etc.
Renovation can also be an opportunity to modernize or upgrade your pool by adopting automated and energy-efficient equipment, LED lighting, and up-to-date coverings and finishes.
It’s essential to schedule the renovation with your pool specialist. If it can wait, plan your project for the off-season, ideally in autumn or winter, so you can enjoy your pool during the summer. If it’s not possible, such as in the case of a leak, make sure your pool specialist can carry out the work within the required timeframe.
With this renovation, your pool will once again become the heart of your home, perfect for creating enjoyable moments.
How long does a pool renovation project take ?
It’s difficult to determine a precise timeline as many factors influence the duration of a pool renovation: the nature of the work, access challenges, weather conditions, and more.
For a simple waterproofing change (replacing a liner or reinforced PVC without touching the masonry), 1 to 2 days are sufficient. If a coating is required to repair the walls, add another day or two.
However, if your project involves reconfiguring your pool with a comprehensive redesign, it could take up to 3 weeks.
Your pool specialist will be able to provide you with an estimated timeline based on the specific work being planned.
What are the benefits of modernizing the filtration and heating system of a pool ?
Your filtration system endures a lot of wear and tear. Constantly in use, it’s subject to external forces that affect its durability (ground settling or shifting, heavy equipment passing nearby, glue deterioration, equipment aging, etc.).
A renovation project might involve replacing the filtration equipment: pump, filter, allowing you to install state-of-the-art, more energy-efficient, and higher-performing systems. Your pool water will then be better filtered with fewer constraints. If you opt for cartridge filters, you’ll not only enjoy easier maintenance but also a more eco-friendly solution with significantly lower water consumption.
What are the different lining options for a renovated pool ?
A pool can be renovated using various materials. Tiles can also be used, although fewer and fewer pools are built with this type of finish. Depending on the design, tile grout can age prematurely, leading to a risk of leaks.
The liner is the simplest, most economical, and quickest solution to implement, but a qualified team is necessary to ensure proper installation. A poorly installed liner may crease, causing premature wear.
Reinforced PVC and 3D Touch are very thick waterproofing liners. Welded on-site, they perfectly fit the shape of the pool. These types of linings are highly durable, making your renovation last. A wide range of colors and textures allows you to give your pool a unique aesthetic.
How can you improve the energy efficiency of your pool during renovation ?
It’s important to prioritize energy efficiency when planning a pool renovation. This is beneficial both for the environment and for saving money.
Here are some steps to consider:
• Install a high-efficiency heat pump: Modern heat pumps have significantly better energy performance than older models. They use less energy to heat the water by harnessing ambient air to generate heat.
• Use a pool cover: Pool covers help retain heat and reduce water evaporation. They keep the water warm during cool nights and minimize water loss due to evaporation, thereby reducing energy and water consumption. Some models, particularly those with polycarbonate slats, can increase the water temperature by 5 to 7°C for free.
• Opt for LED lighting: LED lights consume much less energy than traditional bulbs and have a longer lifespan. The variety of colors and intensities allows for a modern and festive atmosphere.
• Install a next-generation filtration system: Modern filtration systems are designed to be more energy-efficient. Choosing cartridge filters can reduce energy and water consumption while ensuring clean, healthy water.
• Automate pool management systems: Automated management systems can optimize the use of the pump, heating, and filtration according to actual demand, reducing energy waste. These systems can be programmed to operate during off-peak hours or based on weather conditions.
• Regularly maintain the pool: Regular maintenance ensures that all equipment operates at optimal efficiency. Clean filters and well-maintained pumps work more efficiently, consuming less energy.
By adopting these measures during your pool renovation, you can significantly improve its energy efficiency and achieve substantial savings. This not only reduces your energy bills but also contributes to more sustainable and responsible use of natural resources.
Can you modify the shape of an existing pool during renovation ?
A renovation project is an opportunity to completely rethink the shape and dimensions of your pool. Indeed, about forty years ago, it was common to build very large pools, with 12×6 meters being a standard size. Nowadays, the trend has shifted towards smaller pools, with standard sizes being 8×4 meters or even 7×3 meters.
Modern pools tend to be more rectangular and thus smaller, but they still offer plenty of enjoyment, often being better equipped. Renovating your pool allows you to rethink the layout, such as modifying the stairs, creating resting benches, or integrating wellness features like whirlpool jets.
Altering the size and shape of your pool is entirely possible and can breathe new life into your outdoor space. However, this type of project is not trivial, and it’s essential to work with qualified professionals to ensure long-lasting and well-executed work.
How can you incorporate safety features during a pool renovation ?
Incorporating safety features during a pool renovation is crucial to preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of all users, especially children. Here are some steps and tips for adding safety devices such as barriers, automatic covers, and other measures:
- Assessing Safety Needs: Before starting renovation work, assess the specific safety needs of your pool. Consider the primary users, local safety regulations, and the characteristics of your property.
- Choosing Safety Devices: There are several safety devices available depending on your preferences, technical constraints, and environment.
- Safety Barriers: These should prevent access by children under 5 years old and be able to withstand their attempts to breach them. They must be at least 1.22 meters high and include a locking mechanism. The ground clearance should be less than 25 mm to prevent a small child, toy, or other object from passing underneath. If your barrier has bars, ensure the spacing between each bar is between 45mm and 102mm. Your safety barrier should comply with the AFNOR NF P90-306 standard.
- Safety Covers: These can be electric or manual. They must be sturdy and comply with safety standards to support the weight of an adult. Whether it’s bar covers or submerged or above-ground covers, these products meet safety standards. You can request a certification from your pool specialist when purchasing the cover, as this document is sometimes required by insurance companies. Ensure that your cover complies with the NF P90-308 standard.
- Alarms: An alarm system can be used alone or in conjunction with a cover. If you choose the latter, ask your pool specialist for a compatible alarm so that you can close the cover without removing the alarm from the pool. A pool alarm will alert you to any falls into the water, but it is not a substitute for drowning prevention. Immediate intervention is necessary once the alarm sounds. The alarm must comply with the NF P90-307 standard.
- Pool Enclosures: These are considered safety elements, just like covers, alarms, and barriers. A pool enclosure offers several advantages: it secures the pool and its surroundings, protects against debris, and allows swimming even in less favorable weather. A pool enclosure is a costly safety feature that will require a construction declaration before installation. It tends to obscure the pool from view, so if you enjoy seeing your pool in your garden, consider whether an enclosure is the right solution. In any case, ensure the enclosure is locked to prevent unauthorized access, especially by children. The enclosure must comply with the NF P 90-309 standard.
Consult with an experienced pool professional who can guide you toward the most suitable safety solution.
